Let’s not sugarcoat this.

Alberta men are dying by suicide at one of the highest rates in the country. The numbers are heartbreaking. And if we’re honest, they hit closer to home than most of us are ready to admit.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta’s suicide rate is 14.3 per 100,000 people. That’s well above the national average of 10.9.

To some, that might just sound like data. But if you live here, you know those aren’t just numbers.

They’re our friends. Our coworkers. Our brothers. Our dads. Sometimes even ourselves.

This isn’t just about stats. It’s about what happens when men feel alone, overwhelmed, or like they’ve run out of options.

What’s going on in Alberta?

There’s something about life here. The culture. The grit. The idea that you keep your head down, work through it, and don’t complain.

We get it. We’ve done it too.

But when that toughness becomes a mask and silence becomes suffering, men fall through the cracks.

And in Alberta, too many of us are falling.

A Few Hard Truths

  • Alberta’s suicide rate is one of the highest in Canada
  • Men make up 75 percent of all suicides in the country
  • In industries like farming, construction, and oil and gas, suicide rates are even higher
  • Isolation, economic pressure, and a culture of not wanting to burden others are all factors pulling men deeper into the dark

You might have felt it. Or seen it in someone close. You might even be carrying it right now.

We know. We’ve been there too.

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

You’re not weak if you’re overwhelmed.
You’re not broken if you’ve been carrying something heavy.
You’re human. And you’re not alone.

We don’t need more tough-it-out advice. We need real conversations. Eye contact. Honest check-ins. Support without shame.

If you’re struggling, you don’t have to wait for things to get worse. You don’t have to figure everything out alone.

Let’s Not Lose More Good Men to Silence

Alberta is full of men who carry the weight quietly. Who show up, hold it together, and keep going. But we lose too many when they think no one sees them.

We see you.

That’s what MenTELL is here for. We’re building something new. A space where men talk, listen, and look out for each other. Where mental health is part of being a man.

Let’s speak up. For ourselves. For our brothers. For the next guy who needs to hear it.
